  1. In 1896 only the first and second place winners 
  2. were recognized.  The winner received a silver 
  3. medal, the second place finisher a bronze.  In 
  4. 1908, gold medals were added to the game for the 
  5. winners.  In fact though, the first and second place 
  6. medals are actually made of silver, with the first 
  7. place medal only coated in gold.  The third place 
  8. medal is made of bronze.  At first, the design of the 
  9. medals changed with each Olympics, but beginning 
  10. in 1928 the design was essentially standardized.  
  11. The design for the medals awarded in the Winter 
  12. Games changes with each Olympics.

  14. In addition to the victory medals, commemorative 
  15. medals are awarded, along with diplomas, to all 
  16. competitors and officials.
